Female Breast Reduction ( Reduction Mammaplasty)

CANDIDATES (FEMALE)

Women with excess fat, glandular tissue and skin in the breast region such that they experience discomfort associated with overly large breasts.

OBJECTIVE

Reduce enlarged breasts or excess fat and glandular tissue through a small areolar incision and aspirating the excess fat through liposuction.

OPERATING TIME

1 hour to one and half hour

ANESTHESIA

Local with sedation

IN/OUTPATIENT

Usually outpatient.

SIDE EFFECTS

Bruising, swelling, numbness, soreness, temporary pain, infection, change in nipple sensation, blood clots, change in breast contour.

RECOVERY

Back to work: 3 to 7 days. Strenuous activity: 2 to 3 weeks. Exercising: one month. Swelling and bruising: 3 to 6 months.

RISKS

Fluid accumulation, infection, asymmetry. Pigmentation changes (may become permanent if exposed to sun). In cases where there is too much excess tissue there might be the need for a second procedure to remove more tissue after the skin has retracted.
